Author’s Note: In an early scene one of the pilots identifies the SAM (surface to air missile) as a Sidewinder as that’s the type of seeking anti-aircraft missile they’re both familiar with the capabilities of. However, the SAM is more likely to be a shoulder mounted SAM of either a US Stinger or a Russian Strela 3 called a ‘Gremlin’ by the NATO forces. This is not an attempt to mislead anyone, either within the story or any of the readers, but it’s a demonstration of how, when in an emergency, people will fall back to using familiar terms carrying the most information they can.
